Re: Collaborative projects

Mickey and Beth:

Thanks for the tips on responding to collaborative writing projects! I'm
dodging snow-storms at the moment, but will try to get my act together as
soon as possible. I'll begin by following your leads.

Also, Beth, I'd have to look at the Center's records to give you accurate
information about the kinds of collaborative projects students brought in.
Right now I'm over in the English department doing my e-mail since our
Center is not wired. I don't recall off-hand what the education folks
did this semester, but I do know that in the past some students have been
assigned (in Ted Sizer's class, I think) to come up with detailed plans for
their own school. I did two conferences with bio-med writers (same people
each time); they were doing research on the legitimacy of nurse
practitioners and physicians assistants in the face of resistance from the
medical establishment. One of the main problems for this group was how to
collate their research; another was how to keep the overall section
momentum going in their paper. I do know, however, that the writers from
the education course (the ones I talked to, that is ) were generally
frustrated by the assignment, whatever it was this time.

Colloboration - in whatever form - seems to be triggering a lot of
interest here at Brown and elsewhere. What I don't know and need to look
at is how this is being implemented in various courses (beyond the few
instances I'm aware of) so as to see where (or if) the Writing Center fits
in. At some point, Center initiated collaborations might be worth
developing, but right now I need to find out more about the criteria that
(non-English department) faculty use for the projects they assign.

Let me know if you think of anything else! Thanks again.
