While it's not the philosopher's stone, I'd suggest you might want your
pre-dissertation folks to look at John DiTiberio and George Jensen's new 
book, _Writing & Personality_.  Unlike their first book on the subject which
was directed for professional writing instructors, this is a trade paperback
and written for a general audience.  It's very readable with much good advice.

Interestingly, the initial population that brought George and John together
were dissertation students, much like you're describing.
