St. Louis, Before the Fact
I think all this talk about St. Louis has cursed me. I went to work yesterday,
accessed my phone mail and discovered that I have to go St. Louis next weekend,
August 4-8, as a delegate for the Phi Kappa Phi convention (I was a really
artfuldancer trying to avoid for almost a year, but it got me yeaterday.)
First of all, is anyone else going? I'd love to a have a *real* (read
Writing Center) person there. Second, I'm taking (after all, it's almost free)
my famous 22-year-old anthropology-major daughter with me. She's a
vegetarian. (Of course, what else could she be?) I can't find any evidence
that any restaurant in St. Louis ever heard of such a thing. Do any of you who
are familiar with the area have suggestions for where she should eat will I'm
eating the meals my outrageous conference fee entitles me too?

P.S. This one is that the Adam's Mark (312-241-7400; regular rate $119, single
or double occupancy), not a cheap hotel, but it had rooms available with 10
days' notice. The convention organizers also sent a list of hotels within
walking distance. The maps I've looked at say they can't be far from the
Regal. I wouldn't call them cheap, and it's not clear whether or not these are
convention rates. For what it's worth, here they are, with the rates quota to
the Phi Kappa Phi Convention organizers:
