on-line tutoring -Reply

Hi Becky,

Oooo! This is a good question, and not one I'd thought of before
(probably because it's so obvious). I hope people post their replies
for everyone to read! Especially since we are going to start doing
some online tutoring of a sort here in our center!

I have some questions to ask of you:

What is it your center's director objects to with students dropping
off papers? That the papers themselves will be marked-up (thus,
"corrections" will be made on the paper itself)? That the
expectation is that the tutor will simply proofread the paper for the
writer? Or is there something else? Why doesn't the director object
to the online thing? (If you are the director, and I've somehow
missed that point, please excuse my de-personalization here.)

We have a program we are planning to use for on-line tutoring, called
Prep Editor. One of the ways in which it can be used is to put the
writer's paper in one column (the left column) and the tutor's
comments in another column, right next to the paper--paragraph by
paragraph if need be. The idea is that we would not be marking
directly on the paper, would not be making corrections, but would be
asking questions related to the text and maybe making suggestions.
The writers will be able to access their papers--and the tutor
comments--from a mailbox on our network. But I am starting to ask
myself, "Is that different from just handing back the original draft
with marks on it?" What do you think?

I keep missing my childhood lately. I didn't usta hafta *think* so
dad-blamed much!

Can't think of a better place to pose this concern. While you may not
recognize me, I have been edified by your remarks over the past
months while lurking. Its time I popped in! Here's the situation.
Recently while speking with a class about sending papers on-line to
our WC at University of Toledo and talking to students about what
that entailed, (specifically sending remarks and questions about
specific areas of concern) a students wondered how that was different
than just dropping off a paper and then picking it up once it had
been "gone over" which is not something we do. In contrast the
students and paper must be present. Quite frankly, the only answer I
could give was, "Thant's a good question!" So here we are, "Have you
dealt with this? How so? Thanks
Becky
