Re: MBTI and the like
Hi folks,
The trouble with MyersBriggs (am I correct, here?) is that it is
copyrighted and can only be used by a qualified, certified
professional. Me, I'm just your average "literacy engineer" (i coined
that) and not a shrink of any kind. Now while I've taken MBTI (as well
as MMPI; three years of therapy was fun!) I'm not going to flatter
myself that I can turn it to my purposes of making better student
writers.
Still, I have seen an on-line MyersBriggs-LIKE instrument, on the
WWW, that asks bunches of questions, crunches answers and then
tells me something about which MB categories I fit. I forget the URL,
but it should be find-able. But at least it did not step on copyright and
licensure toes (or maybe it doesn't do so legally, but does so
ethically--damned complicated!).
Bottom line: if we non-shrinks can't ethically/legally use MBTI, but if
there are still insights possible that could help us make better writers,
then should we use that MB-like thingy instead?
It's like this: just because I've had a popsicle doesn't mean I can use
the stick to examine other people's tonsils.
