Our reception center consists of chocolates when the budget permits. Often 
students enter the writing center in a frustrated frenzy, and stimulants from 
chocolate stroke them in a major way. By soothing the pallet and allowing the 
cocoa plant to hit the blood stream, students are extremely receptive to tutor 
counselling and actually feel nurtured. 

We have used hard candies in the past and reception was not as favorable, and 
the candy became quite dusty. I also noticed that the WC pamphlets on the same 
desk remained firm, fixed, neglected, and untouched. Since we have lured the 
students in with chocolates it is hard to keep enough pamphlets on hand! This 
is a strategy I strongly reccommend for those of you who have not had much 
success with reception centers.
