Re: value of education
Jeanne,
When I was an undergrad student majoring in Literature I rarely received
support from family and friends. They were always quick to assume that
I was majoring in education, and when I corrected them and told them that
I was "straight literature -- that's all -- nothing else" I was told over
and over again that I was lazy, not going to get a job, and was wasting
my time and my parents money. I was then instructed by some of my technical
associates that I should "marry well".
Needless to say, I graduated in May and by the Fall semester I began teaching
writing at a local J.C. Networking and making the proper contacts played
a role, but the main key was valuing my education for myself and not allowing
society's hang-ups to literally hang me!
