This thread about counseling English majors comes at a very opportune time
for me as I contemplate a new advising manual for our majors. I envision
some sort of tree diagram that highlights possible career paths one might
take as an English major, and ways in which one might plan their
currriculum (courses, internships etc) to facilitate this. I've seen
similar tools put out by other disciplines from their national offices
(history has a very in depth one even if a bit "unelegant"). Does anyone
know of such a resource put out by NCTE or anyone else? I really need some
models to get my idea logjam moving again.

I don't know of a resource, but I can share one approach with you.
In order to respond to the "What can you do with an English
degree if you don't teach?" question, we recently prepared a
three- panel bulletin board which features pictures of our graduates
with captions indicating their current positions in a number of
fields, purposely avoiding using any who were teaching. We use
the board for first year orintations, job fairs, etc.
