Re: Grammar textbook



Sandie, I also teach a course for prospective English teachers.  I've 
been using the complete Warriner's, since that is probably what they'll 
teach from in some form when they get into the high schools.  I 
supplement it with material of my own which they buy in shrinkwrap at our 
bookstore.  We cover grammar (first the forms and combinations, then the 
error-based stuff), punctuation, spelling, and literary terms.  They must 
pass a test before they can student-teach (mandated by the state 
assembly--we're a state university).  I also have them get Holman & 
Harmon's Handbook to Literature for the terms section.  If I had my 
druthers, I'd use Martha Kolln's Understanding English Grammar, but the 
powers that be felt that it was too high level and not as practical as 
what I finally decided on.
