Re: Identity crisis

Here at Fairfield, I have faculty status, yet I report to the dean of the
College of Arts and Sciences (similar to many others, I suspect).

Last year, the position was re-conceived as a tenure-track position in the
English dept with 50% release time for Directing the Writing Center (which
means I teach 3 courses a year, one of which is the Tutor-Training, on a
9-month contract). So I just stepped into it once the deal was done (by our
resident composition person, who now chairs the English dept., and a very
supportive dean who steeped himself in writing center publications to find out
about the trends in the field).

Needless to say, I feel very fortunate, and the arrangement is working out fine
so far, though it is still early. My chair and the dean are already helping me
with the beginnings of my tenure file so that it accurately represents all the
teaching duties that the Center entails. That seems to be everyone's biggest
concern at this point.

Hope this helps!
