I can only tell you that our center is like yours, and we do not have 
faculty status, though I think our administration counts us as faculty 
when calculating the campus student-to-teacher ratio.  We can't get 
tenure nor sabbaticals.  But any lack of status may be offset by our 
autonomy.  Would you be considered members of a specific department if 
you were considered facutly?  Would departmental affiliation affect the 
campus perception of your services?  Food for thought, though perhaps 
you've already digested it.  Good luck with your quest.
