TTU Home Chancellor's Letter

To All Faculty, Staff and Students:

The recent terrorist actions in the United States have evoked a great deal of emotion. That emotion often takes the form of sadness for our losses combined with gratitude for this great country we live in. Some of us are also feeling great frustration and anger at those that would perpetrate such horrible deeds. Given the tragic losses associated with these events and the reactions of many people, I believe it is important that all of us at Texas Tech maintain a high level of tolerance and compassion for each other and the people we serve.

The United States government has affirmed once again a basic tenet of our democracy, a fundamental respect for the dignity of human life in all of its diversity. President Bush has repeatedly urged Americans not to vent their frustration arising from the terrible deeds of September 11 against other Americans. The House of Representatives has approved a resolution condemning bigotry against any individual or group living in the United States.

Tolerance is fundamental to our society and any action against another person based solely on their appearance or beliefs is contemptible and will not be tolerated.

I strongly encourage each of us to embrace an attitude of respect for our freedoms and for one another.

Thank you,

David R. Smith, M.D.
