Access

Only students, faculty, staff, and individuals affiliated with Texas Tech University will be able to access the wireless network at the University. To access the wireless network you must utilize your eRaider account and have one of the following operating systems (OS) installed:

  • Windows laptops - Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2
  • Apple laptops - OS 10.3 or 10.4
  • PocketPC - Windows PocketPC 2003
  • General Guidelines:
    • Laptops purchased since Fall 2003 may have wireless "onboard," so additional expansion cards may not be necessary.
    • Laptops purchased prior to Fall 2003 will most likely require the purchase of a wireless interface card. For more detailed information please contact IT Help Central at 806-742-HELP (4357).
  • Wireless access is available at many campus locations; a complete list of access areas is provided at http://helpdesk.ttu.edu/general/wireless.php.

Notes

  • You may not attach your own wireless networking equipment to the TTU network; you must use the wireless network maintained by TTU.
  • The TTU wireless network is secure and requires eRaider authentication to ensure both individual accountability and secure transmissions. All University electronic information resources may be accessed over the TTU wireless network.
  • Setup and configuration information for laptops can be found at http://helpdesk.ttu.edu/general/wireless.php or by calling (806) 742–HELP (4357).

Caution

  • The wireless network will NOT be a replacement for the wired infrastructure. Wireless networking is provided to enhance mobile communications from laptops and PDAs only. Desktops and workstations will need to connect to the wired infrastructure exclusively.
  • Wireless communications are not as reliable as traditional, cabled networks. Since it is based on radio reception, wireless communications are subject to disruption by a wide variety of external causes; such as microwave ovens, portable phones, and weather anomalies.
