  • FROM THE PRESIDENT

As Texas Tech University approaches its centennial anniversary, our growth and achievements in the 96 years since our founding are highlighted in the remarkable accomplishments of the last year.

We closed the year with news from The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which reaffirmed Texas Tech as one of 131 institutions in the “very high research activity” category. Texas Tech University Costa Rica, our first international campus, welcomed its first class to San Jose, while our efforts in international education were recognized by NAFSA with the Sen. Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization.

Among the many outreach and engagement initiatives at the university, the East Lubbock Promise Neighborhood project, a multi-agency community effort led by the College of Education, received one of four W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Engagement Scholarship Awards from APLU. We also added the university's first National Academy of Sciences member, Dr. Luis Rafael Herrera-Estrella, a plant stress researcher in the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

Our enrollment numbers increased to record levels for the 10th-consecutive year, while new benchmarks were set in retention rates. Student success is reflected in a record number of degrees awarded, more than 8,000, which includes 349 doctorates.

Sincerely,

Lawrence Schovanec, President
